I've been seeing hard-shell luggage praised everywhere lately, and I have too wonder if it's all just clever marketing. I think it's genuinely overrated. While the supposed added protection is a plus, the practical downsides outweigh the benefits, at least for me.
First, the lack of external pockets is a killer. Trying to quickly access your laptop, book, or even just a water bottle in the security line becomes a major ordeal. Second, hard-shell luggage is often less flexible in terms of packing. Soft-sided bags can be squeezed into tighter spaces and can expand to accommodate oddly shaped items. With a hard shell, you're limited to the exact dimensions. And the unavoidable scratches and dents become incredibly visible, making your expensive suitcase look beat-up after just a few trips, whereas scuffs on a fabric bag are much less noticeable. Maybe I'm missing something but give me a sturdy, well-organized soft-sided bag any day. What are your thoughts? Are there specific situations where hard-shell luggage is truly superior?
