It's incredibly frustrating to see cyclists blatantly disregard traffic laws. Running red lights, weaving thru pedestrians on sidewalks, adn generally acting like the rules don’t apply to them end up painting all cyclists with the same brush. As someone who tries to be a responsible cyclist, it makes me cringe.
But short of citizens' arrests (obviously not the answer!), what can be done? I've considered verbal warnings, but that seems like a recipe for confrontation. Maybe better enforcement is the key? Increased police presence at known problem intersections, perhaps? Or would focusing on education and awareness campaigns be a more effective long-term solution? I'm curious to hear if anyone has observed successful approaches in their cities, or has ideas on how to encourage safer cycling habits for everyone.
