Anyone else still fighting the good fight trying to keep older devices useful with newer software? It's a constant balancing act.I recently spent an afternoon wrestling with getting a modern PDF reader to work on an old netbook running a lightweight Linux distro. The core issue, surprise surprise, was outdated libraries.
It really highlights how much software assumes about the underlying system these days. Things like compatibility modes are helpful, but sometimes you end up needing to compile from source (nightmare fuel!) or find older, but still functional, versions of the software. I’ve found that sometimes the "lite" versions of apps are frequently enough better bets for older hardware, as they tend to have fewer dependencies. What are some of your go-to tricks for dealing with software compatibility on older devices? Any specific apps you've found surprisingly cooperative, or utterly impossible to tame? I'm particularly interested in hearing about strategies for updating older operating systems without wholly bricking them, or if you end up going the virtual machine route instead.
